South London Partnership to work with businesses for innovative ‘Internet of Things’ initiatives to improve public services

The South London Partnership (SLP), which consists of five London Boroughs, are offering businesses the opportunity to win contracts to provide innovative solutions using the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) to drive economic growth and improve public services.

3rd February 2020

A pilot competition was announced on Friday 24 January 2020 at the SLP’s Supplier Engagement Event in Sutton, which was attended by over 50 businesses operating within the IoT field.

The event was used to discuss how suppliers can get involved in the project, the judging criteria and how the awards will be evaluated.

This initiative is funded by the Strategic Investment Pot (SIP) as part of the London Councils Business Rates Retention scheme which is administered by the City of London Corporation, and hopes to improve people’s lives through the delivery of a multi-purpose Internet of Things (IoT) platform, which will connect various sensors across borough boundaries.

There are four categories available for businesses to bid for:

1: Transport
2: Health
3: Environmental Sustainability
4: Supporting Local Economic Growth

Winners will be eligible to be awarded a contract of up to £30,000 to run their proposed pilot and businesses are able to bid for more than one category.

All businesses – ranging from new firms, existing companies and social enterprises – who work with IoT technology are eligible to enter the competition.

Initiatives proposed should include Internet of Things technologies that allow councils to collect data to be used to drive “smarter outcomes” across the boroughs.

Example ideas could include:

  • Traffic monitoring and route optimisation
  • Digital town centres linked to local businesses
  • Real-time shared workspaces
  • Connected care (adult social care)
  • Dynamic smart parking
  • Real-time air quality monitoring and interventions
